COLLITS' INN is no longer operating as a B & B
or restaurant. It is now a private
home but the owners can be contacted if you are interested in the history of
Collits’ Inn.
Collits'
Inn is one of the most historic of Australia’s
early inns. Built in 1823 to serve
the first explorers over the Blue Mountains, it lies in the beautiful Vale of
Clwydd at the base of Mt York and the
foot of Cox’s Road. This was the
first road built over the Blue
Mountains.
Collits’
Inn was established in 1823 by a former convict,
Pierce Phigginton Collits and his wife Mary.
Every
traveller moving from Sydney to
the Outer Settlements near Bathurst
would have stayed at the Inn after the frightening descent of Mt York.
In 1831, a
post office was established at the Inn. The coachman
would stay there after the gruelling task of getting the coach and horses
down the mountain. This is now the History Room where documentation, maps and
photos are stored.
The Inn
remained in the Collits family until 1875 when it was bought by Mrs.
Lewington and restored as the Mt York Inn, operating from 1877-79.
In
the early 20th century, the Inn once again became a
popular guest house. It was during this period that the writers of the operetta Collits’ Inn,
Varney Monk and Thomas Stuart Gurr, developed their fondness for the place.
In
1947, the Inn was sold to Steve Pilarcik. He was a Croatian working as a eucalyptus
oil distiller.
It
was then sold to Russell and Christine Stewart in May 1998. After tedious research Collits’ Inn was
restored.
On
the 26th January 2002, Collits' Inn reopened after
major restoration. The Inn flourished and its dining
rooms were filled by satisfied customers from Sydney,
Blue Mountains, the west and overseas.
Collits’
Inn was purchased by the Macdonald family as their family home in November
2007 and is no longer operating as a Bed and Breakfast or restaurant.
